so, after multi-lingual and gestural conferencing with the lady proprietor of Dae Han market and one of her customers, including diagramming onigiri on the back of a grocery receipt, we worked out that sweet brown rice is what I should use for making brown rice onigiri. I never thought to use that because way back when I accidentally bought sweet white rice and it came out all gloppy -- good for sweet rice desserts but terrible for onigiri. I have made one batch so far, and it sticks together just like rice at Korean and Japanese restaurants. Didn't make rice balls from that batch but I will with the next batch, and I have high hopes for success!

Nomming in agreement after a grabbing one in Harvard Square. Still, not small enough for a 2.5-year-old to finish before it melts all over everything in dripping distance.
Also double-NOM to the "Mocha Chocolate Lace" or whatever the heck it was that I had.

I totally agree that most airport food is horrendous and that the "Asian" food that most of us get is so far from real that it is laughable to call it by that name. As you said there is some light coming into our lives in this area, just got to ride it out.

frito-lay in japan has been going nuts lately--we've been getting some crazy (and crazy good) doritos and cheetos lately. i just got some v. tasty kim chee-tos, and butter and nori flavoured doritos. coconut curry doritos are interesting, and really do taste like coconut curry. some of the limited edition ones have been prime rib, ebi tempura curry, and uni. my two favourites, though, are yuzu marinated kurobuta pork barbecue, and butter and clam. oishii!

The hanging out and BSing was, indeed, the awesomest. I definitely feel we wasted our money at Moto, though. The food just wasn't that tasty, by and large. And the principal server ... words fail. Oleaginous. Stilted. Gah.

The cigar was sort of a triumph, I thought -- in the whole food-that-looks-like-something-unfood game, it was the clear winner. Pretty good, to eat, too. But not good enough. The cereal: awesome. The duck canoli: also great. Lots of pretty good food in addition. But when you're plonking down that kind of cash, "pretty good" just doesn't cut it.

The wines ... the highlights for me were the Champagne, the maker of which is escaping me. Some winenerd I am. Also, the '06 and '07 Telegramme: a mini-vertical of a very satisfying wine that realy showed the difference between the two vintages. Of all the sommelier-chosen wine courses I've had, and there've been one or two, those were the niftiest. Unfortunately, I have no recollection what they were paired *with*, so: terrific wines, pairing meh.

It was FN's idea that we share the wine pairing, and a great idea it was. There was *plenty* of wine for the two of us. And it wasn't because I'm a light drinker. Urp.

Can't wait to see you again, FN!
